John Cox

John Cox, Sr. was born about 1724. His parents were Jacob Cox and Elizabeth Merryman.

He married Elizabeth Simpson.

Abraham Cox (1752),
Edward Cox (1758, married Sarah Meredith),
John Cox, Jr. (1758, married Tabitha Amis)
Thomas Cox (1761, married Rebecca Webb, daughter of Moses Webb).

The family came to Sullivan County, Tennessee about 1774 from Baltimore County, Maryland

The Cox family helped to build Fort Watauga.

David Cox, John Cox, Sr. and John Cox, Jr. appeared in Captain Looney's list in 1774.

Edward, John, Jr., and Thomas Cox signed the 1777 petition of men living on the north Holston River complaining about the division of Fincastle County. They felt the line was not equitable and the court house was too far away.

John Cox was on the 1778 tax list of Washington County.

At the 1778 Washington County Court "the last will and testament of John Cox, decd., was duly proved by the oaths of Colonel Carter and Emanuel Carter, and the same to be recorded."

Fincastle County, Virginia was created in 1772 from Botetourt County and abolished in 1776. It was divided into Montgomery, Washington and Kentucky Counties.
